Africa seen as future 'green industrial hub' at first climate summit

Sep 05, 2023

Nairobi [Kenya], September 5: The African continent "holds the key to accelerating decarbonization of the global economy," Kenyan President William Ruto assured participants of the first Africa Climate Summit during his opening speech in Nairobi on Monday.
Leaders from across the continent have gathered in the Kenyan capital to discuss the transition to green energy and lay out priorities for the COP28 global climate conference later this year.
Green energy was not only necessary to protect the climate but "a fountain of multibillion-dollar economic opportunities," Ruto said on the first day of the three-day summit. African countries have contributed comparatively little to the climate crisis, but suffer disproportionately from its consequences. (DPA)
