Floods affect tens of thousands in southern Thailand: Interior ministry

Dec 26, 2023

Bangkok [Thailand], December 26: Floods have inundated thousands of homes housing some 50,000 people in two provinces of southern Thailand following days of heavy rainfall, the interior ministry's department for disaster response said Monday.
As of early Monday, 9,697 households in Narathiwat and Yala provinces, on the border with Malaysia, were affected, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation estimated. Of those, 9,558 homes were affected in Narathiwat and 139 in neighbouring Yala.
Eight schools were shut after their ground floors were inundated. The surging water also submerged roads and rail tracks, disrupting traffic in parts of the country's south.
The department said it had sent response teams to
the two provinces to help those affected and assess the damage.
