Iran warns of doctor shortage due to emigration

Mar 17, 2024

Tehran [Iran], March 17: The Iranian Medical Council has warned of an acute shortage in the country's health-care system and called on politicians not to trivialize the problem of the increasing emigration of doctors.
"The issue of the emigration of doctors is not just a pessimistic one ... we absolutely need clear and realistic solutions to prevent an acute shortage of doctors in the near future," the head of the medical body, Mohammad Rais-Zadeh, warned on Saturday.
According to Rais-Zadeh, the problem is already having a negative impact in the field of paediatric surgery. If something is not done soon, foreign surgeons will have to be brought into the country, he said.
"This will then have a negative impact on the entire health-care system in the country," Rais-Zadeh said, according to state news agency IRNA.
The problem of emigrating specialists has increased dramatically since the start of the presidency of Ebrahim Raisi in 2021. The main reason for this is the ongoing economic crisis in the country.
