Iranian embassy reopened in Riyadh after years of tension

Jun 07, 2023

Cairo [Egypt], June 7: Iran reopened its embassy in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday, after the two regional rivals agreed to resume diplomatic relations in March.
Officials from both countries attended a reopening ceremony, which was broadcast live on the Saudi-owned al-Hadath television station.
Iranian officials said its consulate in the coastal city of Jeddah will also resume operations on Wednesday.
Last month, Iran appointed AlirezaEnayati as ambassador to Saudi Arabia, two months after the two countries signed a deal to resume diplomatic relations after years of tensions.
The rapprochement comes after both countries faced off in regional proxy conflicts for years, including in Syria and Yemen.
Saudi Arabia also plans to reopen its embassy in Iran, but the exact date has not yet been set. Riyadh severed diplomatic relations with Iran following an attack by Iranian Islamists on the Saudi embassy in Tehran in 2016.
