Moscow accuses US of poaching young Russians amid brain drain

Feb 10, 2023

Moscow [Russia], February 10: Amid rising tensions with the West, Russia has accused the United States of luring young, educated professionals abroad. Russian officials handed a note of protest to the US Embassy in Moscow, due to what was termed "quite unacceptable practices" in poaching workers and students, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday, according to Interfax news agency.
He accused the US embassy of misusing social media platforms in order to lure Russians abroad, pointing to a call posted by the embassy on Twitter in late January inviting Russian academics to apply to summer schools in the US.
Russia has been grappling with an exodus of educated professionals since attacking Ukraine and the resulting sanctions imposed by the West. In a further massive loss of young people, hundreds of thousands left Russia when Moscow ordered a partial mobilization for the war.(dpa)
