Police detain daredevil after parachute jump from Eiffel Tower

Aug 18, 2023

Paris [France], August 18: A person was arrested in Paris after jumping off the Eiffel Tower with a parachute, police said.
Early on Thursday morning, police received a tip that a person was seen climbing up the Paris landmark with a backpack.
About an hour later, just before 7am (0500 GMT), which is before the popular tourist attraction opens to visitors, the daredevil jumped off with a parachute.
Officers arrested the jumper for endangering others.
The tower's management company, SETE (Societed'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel) said the man was detected in "less than a minute" by security after entering the site.
Attempts by the tower's intervention brigade to deter him proved unsuccessful and he went ahead with his jump from the attraction.
He landed on the roof of a nearby sports center before being arrested by police, according to BFMTV.
French media reported the daredevil was a male.
His age and nationality are unknown.
Earlier this week, two US tourists were discovered sleeping on the Eiffel Tower in an area off-limits to visitors.
The two had reportedly entered the tower late at night with a ticket and then made their way into the area between the second and third floors.
The more than 130-year-old structure is visited by some 7 million people a year.
The monument was built for the Paris World's Fair and completed in 1889.
