President Biden's 'one job, two things' move

Aug 21, 2023

Washington [US], August 21: The administration of US President Joe Biden has just decided to reopen the migration office in Havana (Cuba). Five years ago, Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, terminated the office.
When taking office in the US, Mr. Trump did not continue the policy of reducing tensions with Cuba like the previous administration of Barack Obama , but turned to increasing confrontation and hostility with Cuba. Mr. Trump decided to close the immigration office in Havana shortly after an employee of the US Embassy in Havana suffered a health syndrome that was initially believed to be caused by a source of sound waves. At that time, Washington accused Havana of mentally terrorizing US embassy staff. Later, US intelligence agencies confirmed that these allegations were unfounded.
The current US administration 's resumption of the office is not only because Washington no longer has any good reason to justify the old action, but also a step towards two purposes.
The United States reopened its migration office in Havana concurrently with the expansion of many other migration offices in Central America and South America. These immigration offices have been extremely useful to the Biden administration in dealing with migrants and refugees entering the United States illegally. At the same time, the move shows an interest in addressing the issue of migrants in Cuba, helping Biden win the category of Cuban-American voters that have traditionally been biased to vote for the Republican candidate. Thanks to that, Mr. Biden added an advantage in the election against Mr. Trump himself.
