President Trump hopes not to attack Iran's nuclear facilities

Jan 24, 2025

Washington [US], January 24: US President Donald Trump said on January 23 that he hoped to avoid launching military strikes against Iran's nuclear program, an option long considered by Israel.
Asked whether he supported military action against Iran's nuclear facilities , US President Donald Trump said he would discuss the issue with senior figures, but did not name them.
"The problem can be solved without having to worry," Reuters quoted Mr. Trump as saying on January 24 about concerns about Iran's nuclear program, adding that it would be good if there was no need to take another step in finding a solution to this problem.
On the diplomatic front with Iran, President Trump said Tehran hopes to reach a deal. "And if there's no deal, I think that's fine too," Trump said.
During his first term from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal reached under former President Barack Obama and imposed a series of sanctions on Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the decision.
In early 2020, it was also Mr. Trump who ordered the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani , Commander of the Quds Force (of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), at Baghdad airport (Iraq).
However, the leader has not moved toward larger military action, and since winning a second term has distanced himself from advisers with "hawkish" views on Iran.
According to The New York Times , billionaire Elon Musk met with a senior Iranian official after Mr. Trump was elected with the goal of finding ways to reduce tensions.
In another development, Mr. Trump withdrew security protection for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was a loyal ally of his before considering confronting Mr. Trump in the presidential campaign.
US authorities suspect Iran wanted to assassinate Mr Pompeo in revenge for the death of General Soleimani, but Tehran denies this allegation.
