'Russia will use Gaza conflict to aid war in Ukraine'

Oct 09, 2023

Moscow [Russia], October 9: US experts believe Russia will exploit the attacks of the Hamas against Israel for its war against Ukraine.
In an information campaign, the Kremlin accused the West of neglecting the conflicts in the Middle East in favour of support for Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington wrote in an analysis on Saturday evening.
The analysts noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry had accused the West of blocking the efforts of the so-called Middle East Quartet, which includes the US, the EU and the United Nations in addition to Russia.
The Foreign Ministry in Moscow says Russia also has contacts with the Hamas, which rules in the Gaza Strip and is classified as a terrorist organisation by the US, the EU and Israel.
The Kremlin's Middle East envoy, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, has held talks with Hamas representatives several times this year, on the phone and in personal meetings, according to the ISW.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday again pointed to Moscow's efforts towards a two-state solution, according to the ministry.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is deputy head of the Russian National Security Council, said on Telegram that the violence between Hamas and Israel was to be expected. "This should have been dealt with by Washington and its allies," Medvedev wrote, adding that the US is a key player in the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
