South Africa to increase border deployments to crack down on crime

Mar 26, 2024

Johannesburg [South Africa], March 26: South Africa's Border Management Authority (BMA) said Monday that more border guards will be deployed at the country's ports of entry to assist with law enforcement as there would be increases in movements during the upcoming Easter weekend.
The BMA has also extended the operating hours of various critical ports ahead of the Easter weekend to better accommodate travelers, said BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato when briefing the media on its Easter Operational Plan in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa.
The BMA and other government departments have been prepared for the influx of more than 1 million people through the country's ports during the Easter weekend, and they will focus on ensuring consistency of ports and curbing cross-border organized crime and other general crimes, said Masiapato.
"As the BMA, we would like to issue a stern warning to travelers and all officials not to get involved in any kind of illegal activities, as they will be caught and harshly punished," Masiapato said, adding that they will continue issuing fines to bus companies responsible for bringing illegal migrants into the country.
