Strikes disrupt transport, health services, schools in Italy

Mar 09, 2024

Rome [Italy], March 9: A 24-hour national strike action in Italy disrupted transport, health services and the school system on Friday, as unions demanded stronger measures to address gender imbalance in the job market as well as better, safer working conditions.
Trains, ferries and local public transport suffered major disruptions as workers from both public and private companies participated in the walkout, though levels of involvement varied across different regions.
The national railway company, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), and local transport operators worked to ensure essential services for travellers and commuters in the peak hours.
Some 90 percent of employees in the energy company Enel took part in the walkout, ANSA news agency reported citing trade unions' sources.
Public schools, universities and hospitals across the country were also affected by the strikes, although to a lesser extent.
Further strikes in transport have been announced for later this month. Strikes scheduled in Milan on March 22 will involve the local metro, buses and trams, while FS workers will take the relay on March 23-24.
