Switzerland to practise fighter jet take-off and landing on highway

Feb 01, 2024

Geneva [Switzerland], February 1: The Swiss Air Force is preparing for a worst case scenario and will practise taking off and landing on a highway with F/A-18 fighter jets in June, after the government approved the plans on Wednesday.
The A1 highway section between Avenches and Payerne in the district of Vaud to the south-west of the capital Bern will be closed off for maximum of 36 hours from June 4 to 6.
Traffic will be rerouted, while the air force wants to test if the jets can take off and land in other locations in case the airport is not available. "The security situation in Europe has continued to deteriorate in recent years, particularly with the Russian war against Ukraine," the government said.
The army has to strengthen its capabilities. The air force has its resources spread out, making them more vulnerable. "The air force should also be able to operate from decentralized, possibly temporary locations if possible," the government said. (DPA)
