Thousands of residents evacuated as Indonesian volcanoes erupt again

Jan 15, 2024

Jakarta [Indonesia], January 15: Indonesia's Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra erupted twice on Sunday morning, the country's volcanology agency said. The eruptions occurred after the authorities raised the alert level to 3, the second highest, on Tuesday.
No casualties have been reported, but the authorities have evacuated more than 100 residents living within the exclusion zone within a 4.5km radius from the crater.
Residents living along the banks of rivers upstream from the volcano have also been warned of the possibility of floods during the rainy season which has begun in some parts of Indonesia, including Sumatra. The 2,891-metre volcano has been erupting almost every day in the past week. Its deadliest eruption was on December 3, which killed 24 hikers.
Another volcano on the Indonesian archipelago, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province also erupted twice on Sunday, as it has been showing signs of increased volcanic activity.
