US judge rejects DACA immigrant deportation program

Sep 15, 2023

Washington [US], September 15: On September 14, AP reported that Judge Andrew Hanen in the US had just ruled that DACA - the program to delay deportation of young illegal immigrants - was illegal.
Accordingly, Judge Hanen agreed with the lawsuit of 9 states requesting to end DACA, including the states of Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, West Virginia, Kansas and Mississippi.
By March, there were 578,680 DACA participants. The above states criticized that DACA cost the US hundreds of millions of dollars in health, education and other costs, and argued that the government did not have the authority to promulgate this program in 2012. The US government, The state of New Jersey, the Legal Defense and Education Fund denied the above allegations.
Mr. Hanen's ruling prevents the government from approving new applications, but does not yet take effect on deporting current DACA beneficiaries, due to the appeal period. It is expected that the ruling will be appealed to the US Supreme Court.
